Training

Introduction by Squadron Leader D Turner RAFVR(T)

As Wing Training Officer (WTO) I am responsible for the development of Cadets by ensuring quality training programmes are delivered. I take this role seriously and am fully committed to improving the standard of training and support that we give to our Squadrons within Staffordshire Wing.

The Air Training Corps, as the name implies, is primarily about training, which makes the WTO role very important. The challenge I have is to make sure that we all remain focused and concentrate our energies on the core ATC activities as covered in the syllabus and ACPs. This means that occasionally we have to go back to basics and remind ourselves what we are here for.

Fortunately there is a Wing Training Team which is made up of dedicated staff (uniformed and civilian) and cadet SNCOs whose contribution is usually in addition to their normal Squadron commitments.

The training team brings together a number of facets of the ACO under one banner. The advantage of this is that no element is of training stands on its own and so benefits from the skills and knowledge of the full team.

The team covers the following areas:

Vocational Qualifications   Flt Lt O'Dell
Cadet Development   Sqn Ldr Turner
Communications   Fg Off Swift
First Aid   Flt Lt Ball
Flying and Gliding   Sqn Ldr Jukes
Health and Safety   Flt Lt Sutton
Leadership   Flt Lt O'Dell
SETPOINT Engineering   Flt Lt Wheatley
Target Shooting   Flt Lt Sutton

As with any process or activity improvements can be made so any feedback positive or not would be welcome. I would always welcome additional members to the team so if you feel that you can offer any help please contact the Wing Training Officer.
